My first post!

Okay, so I am learning Latin. So what I am going to do, sense this is my first blog, is put some Latin words and their English meanings. I am in no way a professional Latin teacher, but I do know some of the basic words and techniques. Some things you should to know about Latin:
1. Latin is an inflected language. This means it uses word endings instead of word order to tell you what is happening in the sentence.
2. Latin verbs have pronouns but the pronouns are already included in the word. Example: Pluit- "It is Raining".
3. Latin Diphthongs: ae=aisle, au=mouse, ei=reign, eu=has no equivalent in English, sounds like the Latin seu, oe=boil, and ui=sounds like the Spanish muy.
4. The v in Latin sounds like a w.
5. c and g are always hard as in cat and get.
6. When i is a consonant, it makes a y sound like in yell. It is a vowel when it is in the beginning of a word with a vowel immediately preceding it or when it is between two vowels in the middle of a word.
7. Q works the same was as in English.
8. R is trilled (like a dog barking).
9. s sounds like say and t like tot
10. x makes the ks sound as in mix
I think that is all you need to know to get started. So I will start with a Roman proverb:
"Nulla possessio, nulla vis auri et argenti pluris quam, virtus aestimanda."
In English this mean: "No possession, no wealth of gold and silver should be considered of more value than virtue."

So, now I will type a few words in English and Latin so you can have a simple conversation.
Salve=hello(to one person)     Salvete=hello(to more than one person)     Quid agis?=How are you going?     Bene=well    Optime=great    satis bene=ok     male=badly   Quaenam est tempestas hodie?=How is the weather today?   Ningit=it is snowing   Pluit=it is raining   Nimbi in caelo sunt=it is cloudy   Calet=it is hot    Frigit=it is cold    Sol lucet=it is sunny    vale=goodbye(to one person)   valete=goodbye(to more than one person.

        Till I blog again, Matellicpink.
